The job, in order
What to do about bed bugs, starting tonight
Five steps, the same ones a good technician will talk you through. Doing the first three properly makes the treatment cheaper and more likely to work first time.
Tonight: bag the bedding and wash it hot
Strip the bed into a bin bag, tie it, and carry it straight to the machine. A 60°C wash and at least 30 minutes in a hot dryer is what the NHS recommends. Sleep in the same bed: moving to the couch tends to take them with you.
Tomorrow: find one bug or a cluster of spots
Look along the mattress seams, the corners of the divan base, the headboard bolts and the skirting behind the bed. Black dots like a felt-tip mark, pale empty skins and a flat brown bug the size of an apple pip are what you are after. Pop a bug in a sealed bag if you can.
This week: tell whoever needs to know
Renting? Tell the landlord or letting agent in writing. In a close, tell the neighbours across the landing and above and below, or the factor. Treating one flat while the next one is still infested is how jobs fail.
Then: an inspection and a fixed price
A technician confirms what it is, checks the rooms either side, and puts a fixed price on spray or heat. Expect spray to take two or three visits about a fortnight apart, or heat to take a day.
Afterwards: a check visit, and leave the bed alone
Keep sleeping in the bed so any survivors come out and meet the treatment. A check two to four weeks later confirms it worked. Bites can take a couple of weeks to fade after the bugs are gone.
Tenements and closes
Why one flat is rarely the whole story
Most of Glasgow lives in flats: sandstone tenements in the West End, the Southside and Dennistoun, four storeys round a common close; later council-built blocks in places like Drumchapel, Easterhouse and Castlemilk; and the newer flats along the river and in the city centre.
Bed bugs do not stay politely in one bedroom. In an old tenement they move through the void under the floorboards, round the gaps where pipes and cables pass between flats, and behind loose skirting and cornice. In a modern block they use service risers. That is why a treatment confined to one flat sometimes works for a month and then the bites start again.
So in a close, the useful questions are: has anyone else in the stair had bites, and will the neighbours let someone look? The factor can help get the message round. A technician will often treat your flat thoroughly and give the flats either side a check at the same visit, which costs far less than coming back twice.
Old buildings have practical points too. High ceilings take longer to heat, sash windows leak heat, and top-floor flats with no lift mean carrying heaters up four flights. None of it rules heat out; it just goes into the price.
Who sorts it
It depends who owns the home
Scotland has its own rules for rented homes. This is the short version; it is a general guide rather than legal advice for your case.
| If | Then |
|---|---|
| You own the flat or house | You arrange and pay for the treatment yourself. In a tenement, speak to the neighbours or the factor too, because your flat may not be the only one. |
| You rent privately (Private Residential Tenancy) | Report it to the landlord or agent in writing. Under the Repairing Standard the home has to be reasonably fit to live in, and a landlord who does nothing can be taken to the Housing and Property Chamber. |
| You rent from a housing association | Glasgow has no council housing of its own; former council homes belong to housing associations. Report it to your association, which usually arranges pest control for its tenants. |
| You are a student in a shared flat or halls | In halls, tell the accommodation office the same day. In a private shared flat, the landlord holds the HMO licence and should organise the whole flat, not one bedroom. |
| You run a hotel, hostel or business | A room-by-room inspection, then treatment of the affected rooms and the rooms around them, ideally out of hours. Keep a written record for guests and inspectors. |
Landlords, letting agents and HMO owners: the rented flats and HMOs page covers the Repairing Standard, HMO licensing and how to handle a shared flat.
The work
Bed bug treatment in Glasgow: the options
| Job | What happens | Visits | Typical price, 2-bed flat |

Signs it is bed bugs
- Itchy bites on the arms, neck or shoulders, often in a line or small group.
- Small blood smears on the sheet or pillowcase.
- Black dots along mattress seams and the bed frame, like a felt-tip pen.
- Flat, oval, reddish-brown insects about 5 mm long in seams and joints.
- Pale, empty skins and tiny white eggs in the same places.
Probably something else
- Bites mostly round the ankles, and a cat or dog in the flat: fleas.
- Small hairy larvae near the skirting or under rugs: carpet beetles.
- Tiny silver insects in the bathroom: silverfish, harmless.
Signs as described by the NHS. For a rash or bite that gets hot, swollen or infected, see a pharmacist or GP.
Bed bugs in Glasgow: common questions
How much does bed bug treatment cost in Glasgow?
As a guide, a spray course for a one or two-bedroom flat costs £270 to £620 and heat treatment £700 to £1,400. These are national figures from published price lists, October 2026; Glasgow sits close to them. The price sheet breaks it down by bedrooms.Does Glasgow City Council deal with bed bugs?
The council runs a pest control service you can request online. Check its pest control page for what it currently covers and charges. If you rent from a housing association, report it to the association first. Can bed bugs come from the flat next door?
Yes. In a tenement or a block of flats they travel along pipes, cables, floor voids and gaps under skirting. If a neighbour has had them, or you have had them twice, the flats around yours need checking too.Is spray or heat better for a tenement flat?
Both work when done properly. Spray is cheaper and takes two or three visits. Heat is one long day and kills eggs at the same time, but high ceilings and old wiring need checking first. See heat treatment for what is involved.Should I throw out the mattress?
Usually not. Most mattresses and beds can be treated. If one has to go, wrap it in plastic before it goes down the close so it does not shed bugs on the stairs, and book a council bulk uplift rather than leaving it in the back court.Do shop sprays work?
NHS advice is that bed bugs are difficult to clear without professional help. Shop sprays and foggers tend to scatter them into other rooms and the flat next door, which makes the professional job bigger. Washing, drying and vacuuming help; poison is best left to a trained technician. How do I know it is bed bugs and not fleas?
Flea bites cluster on ankles and lower legs, and fleas jump. Bed bug bites tend to be on skin that was uncovered in bed, often in lines, and you will usually find spots on the mattress seams. If you are not sure, an inspection settles it.How quickly can someone come out?
It depends on the firm and the time of year; late summer and autumn are busiest, when students move in. Tell us how soon you need it in the form and we look for a technician who can do that date.
